I used to have a friend years ago who called that "damning with faint praise" .... you can't be entirely sure if you just got a hug or a kick in the butt. LOL

"DAMN WITH FAINT PRAISE: Compliment so feebly that it amounts to no compliment at all, or even implies condemnation. For example, The reviewer damned the singer with faint praise, admiring her dress but not mentioning her voice. This idea was already expressed in Roman times by Favorinus (circa A.D. 110) but the actual expression comes from Alexander Pope’s Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot (1733): ‘Damn with faint praise, assent with civil leer, and, without sneering, teach the rest to sneer.’"

"years ago" is right... had no idea you actually knew Pope... but this 'name dropping' has to stop ...

And the bad part, of course, is that I'm entirely undeserving of all this abuse.
